February is upon us, and these mild winter days make it hard to complain. We’re cooking up lots of exciting dishes here in Coquettes land, and we can’t wait to return to the stage with our first production of 2012, just in time for V day!
Our first main stage show of the season is a playful look at the agony and ecstasy of love. Salvation is set in Heaven (act one) and Hell (act two) and the guys and dolls of Les Coquettes cover an array of themes including some of these juicy tidbits: crushes, gold digging, domestic bliss, domination and submission, dysfunctional love, gender bending, Latin dance, and church gossip. Look forward to Euro-pop angels, leather clad devils, women in chains, hot librarians, love goddesses, and mad hip hop throw downs (no, we’re not joking.) Tickets are going as fast as prom night virginity, so get yours pronto!
Les Coquettes are very pleased to welcome our wonderful new Technical Director, The Jack of Spades! Jack will make his debut with us behind the lighting board (and in charge of all things technical) on February 12th, and we’re very grateful to have him on board. After meeting Suki Tsunami & Charlotte Webber at a high stakes Baccarat game in Monaco, notorious art thief The Jack of Spades was convinced to join Les Coquettes to escape the watchful eye of Interpol. His nefarious technical know-how has helped the Troupe out of some sticky situations.
We’re not surprised to see tickets for our Speakeasy premiere on Valentine’s Day flying out the door. It seems like a natural fit for the ultimate date night, and with all the love we’re getting from sponsors blogTO and PROUDfm the word about Speakeasy is spreading fast. Here’s the latest on what’s coming up this month at Speakeasy Dinner Cabaret.
Our Big, Rude Guest
Long before enjoying his bluesy growl while waking up slowly over the Drake brunch on the Skyyard, La Minouche fell in love with the sounds of versatile Toronto musician Big Rude Jake. We approached him about coming to play with us and were tickled pink when he said yes. This golden-throated singer/songwriter/guitarist has the perfect sound for the Speakeasy experience. You’ll hear jazz, swing, ragtime, rock’n‘roll, jump, gospel, blues, folk… Add a little cabaret and some punk attitude, and you’ve got Big Rude Jake. Jake appears as our featured musical guest at Speakeasy on February 20th and returns to us again in the Spring. Here’s a little sample of his work to whet your appetite.

The Sweetest Berry of them All
Toronto burlesque starlet extraordinaire Coco Framboise returns to the Les Coquettes stage as our featured classic strip tease artist on February 20th. Miss Coco is always a delight, both on stage and off, and we can’t wait to see which of her numbers she’ll roll out for our Speakeasy guests. Acclaimed performer, teacher, pin up model and savvy business mama, Coco Framboise will no doubt be the Chantilly cream on our Speakeasy dessert show. Discover more of Coco’s realm here.
Headmistress Coco will School You!
The Coco Framboise School of Burlesque offers the most extensive burlesque curriculum in Canada as featured in the National Post, the Toronto Star, Elle Canada, and more! You’ll learn professional techniques mastered on stage from Montreal to Vancouver, and from L.A. to New York and even London, UK and ITALY! All of our classes are designed so you can drop in anytime and they’re all accessible to beginners – even if you’ve never taken a dance class before. Join the fun in a relaxed, giggly environment! Classes still take place on Wednesday nights at Fierce Fitness Studio – 892 College Street, back laneway entrance downstairs. For details visit Coco’s website here.
Twitterpated for Tyler
Remember in Bambi, as spring burst forth in the forest all of the cute little animals started to get horny? Thumper the bunny referred to this phenomenon as becoming “twitterpated”. Les Coquettes think that spring time frisky and musical sensation Tyler Yarema go hand-in-hand, and we’re certain you’ll agree once you see him do his thang. Tyler’s piano-pounding meets heart-throb inducing crooning can be found every Speakeasy during the month of March. You’re not going to want to miss this sensational performer, and if you don’t believe us, check out Tyler here or grab a sneak peak of him live at the Reservoir Lounge on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Toronto is a city filled with talent, and we’re casting our net to see what we can bring to our Speakeasy stage. Our first round of auditions will take place on the evening of Monday, February 27th. If you’d like to audition, please email your photo and resume along with any video footage from your performances to info@lescoquettes.com and we’ll contact you if we think you are a good fit for the Speakeasy series!
